Proof

You must be able to show proof that something on your credit report is not right. Having proof will make the task of fixing your credit report a lot easier. For example, if your credit report is showing something that your ex spouse financed since your marriage was terminated, divorce papers would be excellent proof in this case. You should then contact the creditor that made the mistake, and send them a copy of your divorce papers, showing this does not affect you. The creditor would then send you a letter admitting their mistake, make a copy of the letter to dispute the error. Always keep a copy of the original paperwork for yourself, this will make it a little easier when you try to fix your credit report.

Check for misspellings

When you fill out a request for credit, always double check and make sure you spelled your name correctly. Even the smallest typo could affect your credit report. Making sure your address, phone number, social security number, driver's license number and name are spelled correctly will save you grief in the long run. Even the smallest mistake might add someone else's credit mishaps to your credit report that you will have to fix. Being certain that your information is correct in the first place may save you from having to fix your credit report.

If you find an error on your credit report, fixing it will not happen over night. Be prepared to battle it out with the credit reporters as well as the credit report agencies. Whatever you do, stick to your guns, and do not give up. Your hard work will pay off in the long run, and hopefully you will not have to fix your credit report again.
